Convert ICD 9 to ICD 10 for Free. The ICD-9 code sets used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures will be replaced by ICD-10 code sets on October 1, 2015. ICD-10 Compliance is mandatory for all HIPAA-covered entities, including those who do not handle Medicare claims. There are no exceptions to any HIPAA-covered entities.
All claims with dates of service 10/1/15 and beyond must contain the ICD 10 codes or the claims will be denied. All dates of service before 10/1/15 will still utilize the ICD 9 diagnosis codes.

Getting the proper training will ensure that staff members are ready to use the ICD-10 codes. The type of training required by each staff member depends upon their roles and responsibilities within the practice. Generally speaking, this is the type of training that is most suitable for each member of your practice:
1. Documentation training for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other staff who document in the patient medical record.
2. Coding training for staff members who work with codes on a regular basis.
3. Overview training for staff members engaged in management and/or administrative functions.
In addition, providers should plan to do both internal and external testing in order to ensure compliance by the compliance date. Practices should plan to test claims, eligibility verification, quality reporting, and other transactions and processes that involve ICD-10 codes from beginning to end.
As with any major transition, preparation and planning are key. Taking the necessary steps to prepare for this conversion ahead of time will help ensure a smooth transition and timely payments for healthcare services.
